NCAA Merchandise Sales Helps College Students

image

When The Ohio State football team hoisted their BCS football trophy in the air earlier this month, students back in Columbus also got a boost from merchandise sales. Here’s more from The Columbus Dispatch:

Winning the first national championship in the new playoff system is a gift that Ohio State University officials expect will keep giving — and one that ultimately will benefit students.

They expect a $3 million bump in royalties over last year from licensed merchandise sales, based on anticipated revenue of $17 million in royalties this year.

Just how is the merchandise money divided at the university?

For every dollar that goes into the licensing office, 55 cents goes to academic affairs, which handles scholarships, libraries, ongoing programs and the university’s 14 college units; 15 cents goes to the athletics department; 15 cents goes to the alumni association; and 15 cents goes to the student life program and its 1,000 student organizations.

Then at 9 pm, O-H-I-O State’s 42-35 victory over Alabama drew 28.27 million viewers, surging 150 percent from last year’s Sugar Bowl.

This is good news for ESPN who is reportedly paying $470 million annually to host the semifinal games of the College Football Playoffs.

Ball State Students Stumble Upon Economics

Ball State athletics has an annual budget of over $17 Million a year. After revenue is collected from tickets, teams paying the University, parking, donations, etc it still has a budget shortfall of $11 Million. Enter the students. Fees are tact on to their tuition to make up this shortfall. Students did not realize this like this one:

“Wow, I wasn’t aware of that,” Ball State freshman Macon Shroyer from Selma

All the MAC schools are doing what Ball State is doing.

The vast majority of students in the Mid-American Conference, of which BSU is a member, are “flat-out stunned” to learn how much they pay in athletic subsidies, says David Ridpath, associate professor of sports administration at Ohio University, who surveyed 3,243 MAC students.
