Dancing with the Devil: ESPN & President Obama’s Cuba Trip

Question: Which one do you think ESPN/Obama Administration gets more upset about:

A) People criticizing ESPN for showing Michael Sam kissing his boyfriend during the 2014 NFL Draft

or

B) Cuba imprisoning gay people

As an avid sports fan for football, I hardly ever watch or listen to ESPN anymore. Several years back they went from sports reporting to social activism during their course of reporting.

Most people know President Obama’s quest for lecturing on the supposed ills of the United States. His resume includes being a “community organizer”. One of his most celebrated moments in the “Social Justice Warrior” culture in America was when the Supreme Court ruled in favor of gay marriage and he had the White House lit in rainbow colors.

What I find ironic of both ESPN & President Obama is their coming trip down to Cuba for a MLB baseball game. For all the tough talk here in America, they will be bowing down to the Castro brothers and their brutal regime. Here’s the White House official statement:

“Americans and Cubans share a love of baseball, and this is yet another powerful reminder of the kinship between our peoples as well as the progress we can achieve when we leverage those natural ties,” a White House official said Tuesday.

Seek and Destroy

Cuba has waged a successful media campaign in America portraying itself just a little impoverished peaceful country. In 2016 you’ll see people wearing Che Guevara t-shirts. Anti-American filmmaker Michael Moore once did a film showing how Cuba’s healthcare is better than America’s. News reporter Diane Sawyer once visited Cuba and did a piece marveling at the country’s high literacy rate. Dan Rather hugged Fidel Castro in the 1990’s when he visited the CBS newsroom.

What is the reality?

Here are some stats I found on Cuba and the death the Cuban people face down there. The follwing stats are up to 2008 via El Nuevo Herald:

  • Deaths at sea from people trying to escape is around 77,000. Not all were from drowning. Cuban government has special military units trained to capsize boats of people fleeing by either ramming or just gunning them down.
  • Over 200 documented killed by Cuban government trying to escape. 227 were killed trying to escape communism over the Berlin Wall for comparison.
  • Thousands of disappearances of Cuban’s based upon their political beliefs, practicing or supposed homesexuality and just being accused of dissention.
  •  Raul and Fidel Castro over saw numerous executions. These two dictators together maybe responsible for over 100,000 deaths through various methods.

Even in 2016, the Cuban regime now led by Raul Castro, is still harsh. In January, the Cuban Commission for Human Rights recorded 1,414 political arrests across the island. Most were short-term detentions. Add in MLB’s decision to host this event is little perplexing. The L.A. Times did a piece highlighting current Cuban MLB players who defected to the U.S. in just the last five years. These players didn’t exactly just get on a airplane and come the U.S. Many escaped by boat. One player, Yasiel Puig, had to solicit help from Mexican drug cartels. That isn’t exactly your first choice for setting up trips to travel abroad.

“Black Friday” 1962

Did you know the FBI foiled a bomb attack by the Castro brothers and Che Guevara? Writer Humberto Fontova details out how the FBI stopped possibly what could have been thousands of casualties:

on Nov. 17, 1962, J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI cracked a terrorist plot by Fidel Castro’s Cuban agents that targeted not only Macy’s in New York City but also Gimbels, Bloomindale’s and Grand Central Station with a dozen incendiary devices and 500 kilos of TNT. The holocaust was set to go off the following week, the day after Thanksgiving. A little perspective: The March 2004 Madrid subway blasts, all 10 of the explosions that killed and maimed almost 2,000 people, used a grand total of 100 kilos of TNT. Castro and Che’s agents planned to set off five times that explosive power in the three biggest department stores on Earth — and on the year’s biggest shopping day. Thousands of New Yorkers — probably mostly women and children given the date — were to be incinerated and entombed. Castro and Che Guevara planned their murderous act just weeks after Nikita Khrushchev foiled their plans for an even bigger massacre during the Cuban Missile Crisis. “If the missiles had remained,” Guevara confided to The London Daily Worker the following month, “we would have used them against the very heart of the U.S., including New York City.”

Political pundits will rationalize the trip as a method to “normalize relations”. The Castro brothers are not abnormal….they are psychopathic dictators. Raul has recognized communism doesn’t work and is trying change the economy somewhat, but I doubt it ever goes full capitalistic. Supporters in America who tout that our embargo doesn’t work do have a point since Cuba answers to the Paris Club for their debt. So that economic theory goes both ways. Embargo or no embargo, this doesn’t mean the United States should be catering to the regime in Cuba.

In the end, the trip just defies all logic in what the Obama administration and a company like ESPN will tout for causes on a social scale.
