Coldplay’s YouTube Views Before & After Super Bowl 50

Super Bowl 50 halftime show featured the band Coldplay. The band performed the show for free. Why?

In the day of social media and online sites hosting the band’s music, Coldplay will make more from just being exposed in front of 100 million plus viewers than the NFL just cutting them a check for their usual concert fee.

The Guardian earlier this year put out an article(read it here) showing how bands are paid with people listening to their music using online streaming.

My example of this, I decided to use YouTube and compiled screen shots(date below each shot) of Coldplay’s current video “Adventure of a Lifetime”. The first shot is from January 24th and proceeds to right after the halftime show. Watch as the views of the video explodes over two weeks.

Editors Note: the views after the halftime show barely moved that night and throughout the next morning. I’m assuming YouTube is cautiously updating.
